Boko Haram
had been becoming increasingly bold in recent months, not to mention
well-armed, sparking fears that it is getting help from other Islamist groups.
Armoured vehicles are now being used during their assaults, which are becoming
bolder. The border between Nigeria and its north-eastern neighbours has proven
to be porous, allowing the smuggling of weapons and fighters. A French family
was even kidnapped in Cameroon and held in Nigeria - they were later released
across the border after a ransom was allegedly paid. In short, Boko Haram was
clearly becoming more than a local nuisance and there is little doubt Nigeria
was under pressure from both inside and outside to do something.
