George Clooney Fiance’s Fiancée Amal
Alamudin Wears Stunning Custom Crafted Necklace Created by Disabled Tanzanian
Jewelry Makers
Tanzanian-based Jewelry Company Shanga
Announces Debut of “The Amal Necklace"
ARUSHA,
TANZANIA-,Shanga
Shangaa Ltd., a Tanzanian-based company dedicated to supporting and empowering
the disabled community through jewelry making, is thrilled to announce the debut
of “The Amal Necklace”, named after
British power attorney Amal Alamudin and fiancée of award-winning actor and
film producer George Clooney.
The newly-engaged Alamudin
was recently featured in top magazines worldwide wearing the custom handcrafted
Shanga necklace created by a team of disabled jewelry makers in Arusha,
Tanzania.“The Amal Necklace” is beautifully designed from recycled glass, surplus
off cuts of coffee wood, which are used to make larger wooden beads for the
shanga necklaces, and traditional masaai beads.
“We were delighted to see Amal wearing one of our
very own necklaces, designed and handmade in our workshop,” said Saskia
Rechsteiner, founder of Shanga Shangaa Ltd, a jewelry and glass blowing company
committed to environmentally sustainable business practices. “With this
high-profile spotlight on one of our necklaces, we are now encouraged more than
ever to continue bringing signature pieces to our clients.”
Shanga names each signature piece of jewelry after
one of the jewelry makers in the workshop or an individual who has made a
significant impact on the growth and development of Shanga. “It is with great
pleasure that we name this necklace after Amal Alamudin,” said Shanga General
Manager Amy Tew.
Shanga Shangaa, which means "Beads Amazing"
in Swahili, is a small business that employs more than 40 disabled, mute and
deaf people in jewelry making. Employees are trained in creating high-quality
custom jewelry and use their creative skills and talents to develop new Shanga
jewelry designs. Since many disabled people in Tanzania miss out on educational
opportunities, employees are also taught basic reading and writing by a teacher
paid for by the company.
“It is important to us that the public know that this
necklace was made by disabled people in Tanzania. It further supports our
endeavor to empower these people and break down stigmas attached to this
community,” said Rechsteiner.
In March, Mr. Clooney and his new fiancée, traveled
to Tanzania on a romantic safari holiday where they purchased the necklace from
Shangaa’s Serengeti Jewelry collection. The jewelry company produces a range of
beautiful necklaces made from beads and a selection of silk, kanga, chiffon and
voile colored fabrics.
“We cannot explain the joy our staff have in seeing
this Lebanese beauty wearing one of our striking necklaces from our Serengeti Jewelry
collection to supplement her casual safari wear in the Tanzanian bush. And if
we do say so ourselves, it looked stunning!” said Rechsteiner. .
