All is Set for the 8th Edition of EAC Military Games and Cultural Event - 2014 in Zanzibar







East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania,  Uganda’s Defense Liaison Officer at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, Col. Sam Omara has today confirmed that all is set for the 8th Edition of the EAC Military Games and Cultural Event due to take place from 18 to 30 August 2014 at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar, the United Republic of Tanzania.

The EAC Military Games and Cultural Event are geared towards enhancing solidarity and promotion of cooperation through sports and culture among the EAC Partner States Armed Forces; undertaking mutual technical assistance towards the development of sports and culture in the Partner States Armed Forces; and contributing to regional effort for peace through sports and culture.

The Military Games and Cultural Event are also meant to encourage physical education, sports and interaction of the diverse and rich EAC culture and customs within the military; encourage and support all the measures designed to establish and strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity among the Partner States Armed forces; entrust the host Nation with the organization of the Event under its aegis, and offer equal opportunity to all participants in the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

The  8th EAC  Military Games and Cultural edition, which is running under the theme; One People One Destiny through EAC Military Games and Cultural Event 2014, will have its official opening ceremony on 20 August 2014 and the official closure  on 29 August 2014  at the 15,000 capacity Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.

The sporting disciplines for the 8th EAC Military Games and Cultural edition will include; Football (Men), Basketball (Men), Netball (Women), Handball  (Men), Cross country (Women), and Cross country (Men).

A total of 430 troops will participate in the games and cultural event and entrance to the stadium is free of charge. The Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Department at the EAC Headquarters is calling upon the people of Zanzibar and friends to endevour to attend and follow the Games and Cultural event at the stadium.

Notes to Editors

The first EAC Military Games and Cultural Event was held in the Republic of Uganda in 2005, the second was in the Republic of Kenya in 2006, the third in the United Republic of Tanzania in 2007, Uganda hosted the fourth edition in 2008, the fifth was in the Republic of Rwanda in 2009, the Republic of Burundi hosted the sixth edition in 2011, and the 7th in the Republic of Kenya in 2013.
